About BIPOC Composers

BIPOC Composers is a community-driven project born out of a desire to research, preserve, and share the music of Black, Indigenous, and other composers of color. Our goal is to shine a light on their invaluable contributions to the global musical canon.

In addition, Dr. Nave Graham is the co-author of the original repertory database from where these works were first sourced, Flute Music by Black Composers—an ongoing effort to research and promote the works of underrepresented composers. The original database was adapted by the National Flute Association as well as the Institute for Composer Diversity.

This website is maintained freely by volunteers. The database relies on community collaboration and contributions to keep composer listings accurate and comprehensive. Whether you have new works to add, historical context to share, or corrections to suggest, your contributions are welcome.
